The use of boat boarding areas started after the excavation work completed in Meiji 23 (1890) to carry passengers and cargoes on boat through Lake Biwa Canal. It was in use until the last boat carried 4.5 tons of sand from Otsu to Yamashina in September, Showa 26 (1951).
