Heian-Jingu Shrine was built in Meiji 28 (1895) in commemoration of the 1100th anniversary of the transfer of the national capital to Kyoto. It was built as a part of restoration of the Imperial Palace at the time of transfer of the capital, and it enshrines Emperor Kanmu, the 50th emperor who transferred the capital.
